How will infrastructure improvements in the parks off-leash space benefit the park?
Currently, over 6000 users and 5000 dogs visit Southland Park each week. This level of use is significantly higher than what was originally anticipated when the park was officially created in 1994. Popular use of the park has resulted in overall deterioration in the health of the park, and damage to the park’s natural areas, including the banks of the Bow River, vegetation communities and wildlife habitat. In order to support the popular use of the park and ensure the long-term sustainability of significant ecological habitats, Parks will be undertaking a number of park improvements. Off-leash infrastructure improvements will be designed to attract users to the park’s off-leash area and provide new alternative destinations, thereby reducing use pressures in the park’s natural areas. • What are the improvements Park’s has planned for 2008?
