How will having a baby with Down syndrome affect my family?
Caring for someone with any disability or illness can be challenging, but keep in mind that you are not going through this alone. You have family and friends that will lend support, and there are many excellent community resources that can assist you with everything from educating your child, to providing the right medical care, to offering emotional support. You can also speak with one of DSACO’s Parent Mentors who have walked the same path, and are excellent sources for information and encouragement. While there will be trying times, the consensus among families living with Down syndrome is that the positive impacts of loving and caring for a child with Down syndrome far surpass the challenges. Your family will likely grow stronger and closer as a result of the experience, and your new baby may very well improve your outlook on life, teaching you to focus on the things that are truly important.
