How will desktop problems be resolved?
The Year 2000 problem affects desktop computers as well as central mainframes and servers. Apple Computer designed its computers with the Year 2000 problem in mind, so all Macintosh hardware and software is Year 2000 compliant. IBM-compatible PCs are another matter, however. Virtually all PCs manufactured before July 1996 will have problems. In the case of application software on either PCs or Macs, odds are high that these packages will have Year 2000 problems. The IT division will test the various desktop models and operating systems currently in use on campus and will communicate the results to departments and units. In some cases, the best unit response will be replacement of the non-compliant desktop machine; in others, an upgrade may take care of the problem. All non-compliant desktop machines should be replaced by the middle of 1999. If software on a desktop machine is not compliant, it should be replaced with compliant versions when they exist.
