How will decreasing maintenance levels on some roads improve their safety rating for motorized mixed use?
In some cases roads were removed from consideration as mixed use routes because an engineering analysis found that their maintenance level and conditions allow for vehicles to operate at to high a speed for safe mixed use. If these roads are maintained at a lower maintenance level they will likely become rougher, resulting in slower speeds. A second engineering analysis would then be performed to determine if the lower maintenance level resulted in reduced risk due to vehicle speed. If so, then the road could be considered for designation for motorized mixed use.
