One of dental education’s principal responsibilities is the development of graduates who are lifelong learners. Information supporting delivery of the most effective oral health care is too abundant and changing too rapidly to expect our traditional “expert telling the novice” approach to be effective. CCI will attempt, through the development of new competencies and identification of their supporting foundation knowledge, to develop a consensus framework for the contemporary education of a graduate of our pre-doctoral education programs–a competent, new general dentist. A dental school will be able to use this framework, if it chooses, to assess its curriculum and create points of discussion for its faculty about the future of its curriculum.
