How where land mines used in World War 1?

I believe Land-mines were only used towards the end of WW1 and were no where near as sophisticated as our modern ones. They were generally deployed in a close but randomised pattern in between rows of barbed wire, often this was placed in front of the trenches (though not too close because of the shrapnel danger to ones own troops) but also on either side if passable places so as to cause the “Enemy” to bottle-neck and leave them vulnerable to artillery barrage.
