In general, Elizabethan women would expec to marry, and among the upper classes marriages were sometimes arranged when the prospective bride and bridegroom were quite young, in their early teens perhaps. Among the common people, it was more usual for people to choose their own marriage partners, and to marry in their twenties. Upper class girls might receive a classical education like their brothers, since it was thought desirable at this time that women be highly educated. Middle class girls might be educated at home, or might perhaps attend an elementary school, there do seem to have been schools for both boys and girls at the elementary level.
