How Were the Soil Samples Obtained?
The soils selected for analyses were chosen by the soil survey Party Leader (now known as the Project Leader). During the course of the soil survey, soils were mapped. Certain soils were selected as having characteristics that represented a soil series or needed characterization data to establish a new soil series. Other soils were selected for analyses because they exhibited unique features. After a soil was selected for sampling, a backhoe dug a hole large enough for sampling purposes. Pictures were taken of the soil. A soil description was made of the soils morphology. Samples were taken according to horizon. If the horizon was too thick, the horizon was divided and sub-samples were taken. Bulk samples were taken for physical, chemical, and mineralogical laboratory analyses.
