Ancient folks were very interested in what happened in the sky, many believed it controlled events on Earth, so when some “stars” moved around the sky, they became special and were called planets which is Greek for wanderers. Most likely I think Venus was discovered first, ironically some thought the morning apparence of Venus was a different planet than the evening, then Mars, then Jupiter, Saturn and finally Mercury which is the hardest of the naked eye planets to find.Uranus was discovered in modern times using telescopes as was Neptune and Pluto. It would take more than one of watching a naked eye planet to determine its motion aginst the background stars in most cases.
