How were the first two priority areas chosen for COMPUS?
COMPUS was directed to focus first on proton pump inhibitors (drugs for gastrointestinal problems) and diabetes management. These areas were determined by the federal, provincial, and territorial (F/P/T) Pharmaceutical Issues Committee and approved by the F/P/T Deputy Ministers of Health. The priorities were selected based on criteria such as large deviations from optimal utilization of prescription medications (over- or under-use), size of patient populations, potential impact on health outcomes and cost-effectiveness, potential to effect change, benefit to multiple jurisdictions, and measurable outcomes.
