How were the battles fought before world war 1?
I suppose there are perhaps 3 conflicts which directly affect WW1: The US Civil War has shown how cavalry are in decline on the battlefield. The musket has become the rifle & the artillery is becomming more powerful. As well as the use of trenches in a modern setting, the siege of Vicksburg for example. Conversely the cavalry in the Franco Prussian war of 1870/71 is used dramatically: This affects armies for a generation. And the British experiences against the Boers in South Africa had an effect on the British Army. It is said the Army Britain sent to France in 1914 was one of the finest ever. Sad to say within a year most were dead….
