How were serfs diffrent from freemen?
Legal penalties also differed if they were perpetrated by serfs or freemen or against serfs or freemen–i.e. if a freeman killed a serf he paid the leigelord or laird a fee or fine for damaging property, if a serf killed a freeman the was serious prison, labour, or corporeal punishment up to death–this could happen if the freeman couldn’t pay the fine as well.
