I watched a documentary once on the Gestapo and their interrogations of the French resistance. During the interrogations they would beat those in question, smash their fingers between two steel bars (i forgot the name… they use this device in construction work though to tighten nails, etc.), beat them with bats, and in some cases put them on a medieval rack. From what i heard the rack was never proven to be used. The Luftwaffe had an approved list of interrogation though, and Hanns Scharff was one of those who thought it was best to act like you were the prisoners best friend to get the information you wanted. Most interrogation centers worked like this for downed pilots and ground troops, where they would say “If you don’t give us what we want, the Gestapo will get it for us from you.” The Gestapo alone was enough to get many to turn over information.
