How well would sand work instead of cement in filling in gaps between brick edging along flower beds?

This is what I did: Took 3″ X 3″ bricks and dug a trench and ‘buried’ the bricks at ground level (mower blade goes over it). Placed each brick very close to each other. The very next year, if a brick wasn’t as level, pull up and either add or delete some dirt. That was 4 years ago and been pleased with it. It makes a simple and decorative border without the extra work. I brushed in sand again and again in the cracks of the same bricks when I created a base for my fountain. This had a lime layer and the level sand layer prior to the bricks. I’m fighting weeds and bugs that burrow in the sand since. This was done 7 years ago.
