How well prepared are our high school mathematics and science teachers?
An extremely high percentage of high school mathematics and science teachers lack adequate preparation in the content area they teach. Twenty-eight percent of U.S. public high school (grades 9-12) mathematics teachers were teaching out-of-field (without a major or minor) in 1993-94. In that same year, 55 percent of public high school physical science teachers (physics, chemistry, or geology) were teaching out-of-field. These percentages increase with poverty status of the schools, and for schools with high percentages of minority students.
