How well does communism work in Cuba?
This is a very difficult question to answer objectively because those in favour and those against use so much propaganda. However, as an economic system, it is plainly a failure. The country cannot pay its way and most people live in abject poverty. The Cuban authorities try to make out that this is because of US sanctions but Europe is prepared to trade with Cuba and the Cuban economy is still bankrupt. To contrast with the economy, Cuban healthcare is excellent by anybody’s standard, let alone those of the third world. However, the bankrupt economy does starve the health system of vital drugs and equipment, though if given by aid agencies, the Cuban medical authorities can make good use of them. In most other third world countries there would be insufficient numbers of doctors, nurses and medical technicians to make proper use of the aid. Cuba also has a fairly good record on education. Cuba denies its citizens basic freedoms, such as freedom of expression. My view is that Cuban comm
