How well do drinking water filters and purifiers really work?

Most water filters use activated charcoal which filters a considerable amount of ‘impurities’. The only problem is that you have to ensure that you regularly replace them.

Depends on what you want them to work in relation to – what you are trying to remove from the water. If you are looking to remove impurities such as metals, minerals & dirt, these can generally be trapped with charcoal filters (available for home use). Microbial or viral contamination will not likely be reduced with this method. These home filters work well for the purposes stated on the filters, just don’t expect pure H20. UV light shone on a stream of water will kill a lot of pathogenic bacteria, but won’t remove impurities. microfiltration (using osmotic pressure) is the most effective method for the cleanest water.
