How well do Biodiversity Toolkits Predict Vertebrate Species Richness?
A report has recently been submitted which compares predictions from four biodiversity toolkits – Habitat Hectares (Vic), Biodiversity Benefits (NSW), BioMetric (NSW) and BioCondition (Qld) – against an existing data-set of vertebrate species. The authors assessed whether sites with ‘high’ toolkit scores corresponded to sites with the greatest vertebrate species richness and found overall that the toolkits gave an inadequate representation of vertebrate species richness. This research was intended to inform Toolkit developers and users on their limitations and reliability as well as practical ways of improving their design. Report by: A. Weinberg, R. Kavanagh, B. Law and T. Penman. The full abstract for the report can be read at: www.biodiversity2007.com/abstract/134.htm.
