NGOs are usually focused on one aspect of development but they are expert on that. They have different capacity & approach. They look at things differently. They work in parts of the world, where business world would not go. If you establish a mine in India, it doesn’t make you an expert over geographical regions of India. Social entrepreneurs are always on ground. They have a better feel of local challenges. They understand & track basic issues like that of drinking water. They bring other point of view to the table, besides tremendous work experience. How NGO governance is different from governance of the state? Democratically, governments have the mandate of people to govern. They are the ones who set the policies & hold the power to do that. NGOs on the other hand have their own governance structure. However, whether someone is in government, NGO or business, one has to incorporate accountability, transparency & probity. We have strict rules in Alcan for NGO accounting practices. S
