One more method is there ie Reverse Osmosis,in which water is passed thru’ a fine membrane by a pump, the filtered water comes out as output & the bleed which is around 50% of the total input qty.is thrown out.In this method the taste of water doen’t get affected. This works better for had water/boring water & makes it potable.Aquaguard is best.

Most in home “filtering” water purifiers work by using activated carbon. Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal or activated coal, is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus to have a very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions. There are two principal mechanisms by which activated carbon removes contaminants from water; absorption, and catalytic reduction, a process involving the attraction of negatively-charged contaminant ions to the positively-charged activated carbon. Organic compounds are removed by absorption and residual disinfectants such as chlorine and chloramines are removed by catalytic reduction. I personally prefer the filters that attach directly to the sink faucet. but they all work the same way, I don’t have a favorite brand. there are even systems that do the same thing on a larger scale for your whole house, see below
