How was UNEP involved in developing the Millennium Assessment?
UNEP was one of the four organizations that began this process by co-hosting the first informal meeting to explore the idea. In this role, it was one of the primary catalysts for the establishment of the MA. It was one of 30 members on the exploratory Steering Committee, and now serves as an institutional representative on the Board and Executive Committee. UNEP served as the implementing agency for a PDF-B grant from the Global Environment Facility to help support the work of the exploratory Steering Committee and other related activities. Additional grants were received by UNDP (from the UN Foundation) and World Resources Institute (from the Avina Group, Packard Foundation, SIDA, and USAID) for this planning work and other related activities including the preparation of a “Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE)” designed to explore the availability of data on ecosystem condition and the preparation of World Resources Report 2000-2001 to help publicize the need for and utility of
