The earth tilts on it’s axis as it rotates: In the northern hemisphere in autumn the sun is overhead at the Tropic of Cancer: Midsummer it is overhead at the Equator. Midwinter it is overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn & midwinter the Equator again. The angle of this tilt is 23 1/2 degrees. The Tropics are 23 1/2 degrees north & south of the Equator. (& that is the same for the Arctic & Antarctic circles from the poles.
