How was the Shigeru Ban – Jean de Gastines team chosen?
Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines are the winners of an international architecture competition launched by Metz Metropole, the project owner. Out of 157 entries, 6 were shortlisted by a jury chaired by Jean-Marie Rausch and made up of elected representatives, architects and key figures. After careful deliberation, the jury selected Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines’ project as winner. This choice was approved unanimously by the Metz Metropole Council on December 15, 2003. “We quickly became enthusiastic about the fine, elegant character of the building, by the quality of the proposed materials and by the opportunities for welcoming the public,” said André Nazeyrollas, Metz Metropole vice-president in charge of urban planning and deputy mayor of Metz.
