How was the seminar for managing editors at the Poynter Institute?
It gave me the opportunity to tap into the expertise of other journalists, and extract from them what successes they experienced as managing editors and leaders. What is something you recently accomplished that turned out well? We’re involved in a broad-based initiative called “Real Life/Real News” that’s focused on helping us to better understand what readers want and helping us develop more relevant coverage for readers. It’s about reporting on people, places and events that are significant in the daily lives of readers and covering other news so that it directly connects to them. We do that by writing about important moments in life. For example, West Virginia ranks near the top among states on all ratings for obesity, smoking and many other indicators of unhealthy lifestyles. And the counties of Kentucky and Ohio that [we cover] mirror those poor health habits.
