How was the Sacagawea design chosen for the Golden Dollar obverse?

The U.S. Mint and the Dollar Coin Design Advisory Committee (DCDAC) consulted with a wide range of Americans, including historians, numismatists, Members of Congress and the general public, first in choosing to honor Sacagawea, and second, in selecting the final coin designs. Our outreach program included public hearings broadcast on C-Span, focus groups, public coin design exhibits, extensive print media requests for comments, and posting the designs on the U.S. Mint’s Web site. In total, letter, fax, and Internet comments poured in from more than 130,000 people.
