How was the Roman Colosseum ruined?
The Roman Colosseum was ruined when its stones and bricks were removed to construct other buildings during the Middle Ages (c. 450–c. 1500). A giant amphitheater (outdoor theater), the Colosseum was built around A.D. 75 in the center of Rome. Between the years A.D. 80 and 404 it served as an entertainment center where battles were staged, gladiators competed, and men fought wild animals. It was also a place known for its bloody persecutions of Christians, who were thrown into the ring to fight starving animals. The arena could seat 50,000 spectators and was four stories high, with underground chambers and a primitive elevator system. Most of the structure is still standing today although earthquakes have done additional damage since the Middle Ages. Further Information: Colosseum.
