To playing a mistake-riddled game against Navy and having everything, including those lofty Bowl Championship Series hopes, in momentous jeopardy late in the fourth quarter. And by the end, all of those aspirations were vaporized in an unsightly and eminently disconcerting 23-21 loss to the Midshipmen, in which the defense failed to stop much of anything and the offense failed to convert on numerous red-zone opportunities. Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen completed a career-high 37 passes for 452 yards but also threw an interception and fumbled at the goal-line on a mammoth hit late in the third quarter.
