How was the Hobart Railyards selected as the preferred site?
The State Government appointed a Site Assessment Panel to select a site for the hospital. The panel was made up of experts in health planning, hospital development, hospital operations, transport policy, local government and facilities management. The site selection panel ranked the Railyards site as the preferred site based on the assessment against 12 selection criteria, covering aspects such as access to the site, its size, its ability to expand in the future and financial cost. The public were invited to comment on which selection criteria they thought were important, and more than 280 submissions were received. Respondents rated access and proximity to health and community services as the most important criteria. The panel compared four sites within the CBD; the existing hospital site, the Hobart Railyards, the Campbell Street school site and the TCA ground on the Domain. The Hobart Railyards was selected as the preferred site because it is a large, flat area close to the city cen
