How Was The Great Wall of China Built?
Great Wall (original photo by Exfordy per this license) The Great Wall of China was built by soldiers, prisoners, and the common people. Since the Great Wall is not just one but a series of walls built during many different Dynasties, how it was built and the materials used differed across time (For information about the materials used, see What Is The Great Wall Made Of?). The first wall that is considered part of the Great Wall of China was built by connecting northern sections that had been built during the Spring & Autumn Period (8th-5th century BC) & Warring States Period (5th-3rd century BC). Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, did this to protect against Xiongnu invasions from the North during the Qin Dynasty (221 BC – 206 BC), also destroying sections that lined former state boundaries and got in the way of the Qin empire.ยน Later Dynasties repaired, built next to, or expanded the Great Wall to entirely new places (see Where Is The Great Wall of China Located?)
