How was the Canadian Shield formed and geologic process?

The Canadian Shield is the oldest part of the North American continent. It was formed over 1 billion years ago probably through the collision of volcanic island archs that built on to each other. It is made of igneous rocks and highly metamorphosed rocks. I’m sure there are some sedimentary rocks as well.
