How was the American South permanantly affected by the Civil War?

As a European who spent several years living in the South, what strikes me is the continous sense of greivance against ‘the North’ and the tendency to not be able to accept the fact that the South was defeated. A general ‘siege mentality’ still exists and a suspicion and dislike of ‘Northeners’ as well as a general inability to accept people of other Races… This is my judgement as a qualified Historian, it is not a judgement against the many INDIVIDUAL Southerners I met who were some of the best people ever.
