How was science and medicine such an important part of the ancient Greeks lives?
The ancient Greek people took a passionate, deep interest in science and medicine, as they inherited their curiosity from the ancient Egyptians who were a great inspiration to them. They believed that if you got sick, it was your punishment from the gods above. Hippocrates (460-377 BC) was the first doctor to suggest that a person’s medical or disability condition had nothing to do with religion. The 53 medical books that he wrote read the use of practical cures rather than the old fashioned religious ones. He wrote down how doctors should behave, today known as the Hippocratic Oath. The Hippocratic Oath is still regarded by most Australian doctors as their code of practice. The Greeks knew the significance of personal hygiene to sustain good health.
