How was Pierre Renoirs life admirable and despicable (10 points)?
Despicable? I hope you’re not under the impression that artists are always despicable in some way. There was nothing particularly “despicable” about Renoir’s life. However, one aspect of his career that I consider rather admirable and interesting was his attempt, in the later part of his life, to turn somewhat away from the impressionist style he had pursued to the study of the Old Masters — in essence, to become a sort of student again. The results have been controversial — many art critics and historians don’t care for them — but I find it fascinating that Renoir was willing to make these researches and to take risks in his art for them. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art last month opened a new exhibition on this late material. It will go to Philadelphia this summer. See the third site below.
