How was it used to catch Pitchfork?
Samples were taken from each of the girls at the crime scenes in Narborough, and because DNA is quite stable, it meant the samples taken from Lynda in 1983 were still usable in 1986. Leicestershire Police read about the genetic fingerprinting research that was going on at Leicester University, and thought it would be worth a shot. The samples tested showed that the same man attacked BOTH the girls. So Leicestershire Police and doctors and scientists from the county started testing men in the Narborough, Enderby and Littlethorpe area, in the hope that they would find a match. Colin Pitchfork got another man to take the DNA blood test for him, doctoring his passport. It wasn’t until this man revealed this secret that Pitchfork was arrested.
