How was data collected by organisations (e.g. governments & businesses) before modern technology?
I am interested in how data would have been collected on citizens before modern technology. For example, before computers – did data collection take place? How would a country keep track on its people? I am interested in any time period, even centuraries back. I am writing an essay on how our society has become more dependant on technology over time. I want to create to be able to explain how data collection has become easier over time, due to introduction of technology. Any information/specific events would be very useful. If you know any links to additional resources this would be very much appreciated.
