HOW WAS CHILD LABOR REDUCED IN TODAY S DEVELOPED COUNTRIES?
Four main changes took place: • economic development that raised family incomes and living standards • widespread, affordable, required and relevant education • enforcement of anti-child labor laws (along with compulsory education laws) • changes in public attitudes toward children that elevated the importance of education Sources of information about the history of include Hugh Cunningham and Pier Paolo Viazzo, eds, Child abour in Historical Perspective, 1800-1985: Case Studies from Europe, Japan and Columbia (Florence: Unicef, 1996).
