How was Asian soybean rust carried to the United States?
Asian soybean rust was carried to Louisiana and other southeastern states by Hurricane Ivan, which hit the Gulf Coast states on Sept. 16. Fortunately, researchers at Louisiana State University discovered the disease while they were examining intensively monitored plots in November 2004. Further monitoring efforts showed that the disease was widespread in the Gulf Coast states. The early discovery gives producers and researchers time to prepare for the 2005 growing season.
