How unscrew and screw nuts and bolts without hurting my thumb?

Oh, Dear Heaven! I *never* thought about seeing a question such as this. I, myself, have gone through many, many times of using my fingers to finish removing a ‘nut’ from a round-headed, mistreated screw — said rounded head having a slot for a flat-blade screwdriver, which slot had been ‘ripped up’ by mishandled screwing in and un-screwings. For these *special babies*, I believe that the only correct answer is to use some protective gloves — thin as possible, and yet *tough* as possible (and has been already recommended). But for the shaped (square, hex, etc.) head bolts, screws, and nuts; *I* would want to use the proper designed-to-fit steel tools and special “snake” reaching equipment to unscrew and rescrew those fasteners wherever possible.
