Because water has such a high spsecific heat it does not change temperature as fast as the land area surrounding it. In the daytim the temperature of the land heats up to a point warmer than that of the water of the ocean. This causes the air above the land to heat and therefore rise. Cooler air from over the water comes in to fill the void because the pressure of warmer air is less than that of coller air and air movement always goes from high pressure to lower pressure areas. At night the reverse happens. The land area cools to a point lower than that of the water and now the air over the water is warmer than the air over the land. The ari over the warter has a lower pressure and begins to rise because it is less dense. It is kind of like the air in a hot air balloon. The cooler air from over the land flows over the warmer waters and in tern is warmed and also rises. Now you have breezes blowing gently off shore, the exact opposite to the midday breezes.
