Well, your computer is connected (probably) to a router, which is connected to a modem, which is connected to a series of nodes across the globe. The IP address of your target indicates where the connection should travel, and the connection travels to your friend’s computer on the other end of the nodes, through his modem, router, and finally to a port on his computer.
