How Traffic Lights Work?
Traffic lights work by illuminating a light that is either red to stop, yellow to use caution, or green to go. There are many different types of signals that can use LED lighting or a traditional bulb. In most high traffic areas stop lights are on timers. In areas with less traffic sensors are often used to detect cars and change the signal. Traffic lights have controllers inside that change between the lights depending on the intersection and how many other lights have to be coordinated. Traffic lights change the signals according to mechanical timers, sensors, and switches much like the cogs in a clock.
