I don’t know about US TV. But if you go to the BBC website you can watch streaming videos for programmes over the last 7 days. You can download the programs instead if you wish. Channel 4 has a similar service.

About the easiest & best way I know of is to use Joost. It’s a program, free to download (now, used to require invitations), and they carry a huge number of channels from small and large content providers. A ‘channel’ is made up of a certain number of shows, any of which you can start at any time. (So it’s not like normal TV, where if you click on a channel at 8:17 you’ll be in the middle of a show.) One of the really great things about Joost is that, if you’re watching a series (like Ren and Stimpy), all they have are whole episodes usually. So apart from something like Youtube, where an episode is broken up into 3-10 seperate videos, this is a really great option for TV on a laptop. The breadth of content available on Joost is pretty amazing.
