You can use dry ice for many things. To use in a cooler, buy the amount you need, place a piece of Styrofoam in between the food below and the ice above. Dry ice sublimates at about 1 lb per hour. If you are shipping with it make sure to allow expanding gases to leave package and only use a carrier that accepts dry ice. Never touch dry ice with your bare hands.
