How to tell a good manager from a bad manager?
The manager’s effectiveness stems not primarily from what he says but from his day-to-day behaviour and the kind of human being he is. Accordingly, he strives to set a good example by being efficient, by treating others with consideration, by being firm yet fair. He encourages cooperation and desires a climate of efficiency, but he also a climate of satisfaction, such as a sense of achievement and contribution. A good manager seizes opportunities to give praise and recognition, to offer coaching and to let his people participate in problem solving and decision making. A good manager should inspire confidence. Respect cannot be demanded; confidence cannot be, commanded. Both must be won. One manager will win them because he is brilliant; another because he is fair; still another because he is a professional in the way he does his job; another because he is consistently thoughtful and considerate.
