You should set UW-DBM 4 to Big5 or GB mode depending the Chinese source. For Internet Chinese newsgroup alt.chinese.text, you should set to HZ mode, for Alt.chinese.text.big5, you should set to Big5. UW-DBM 4 provides automatically support HZ code either Big5 or GB mode. For a lot of Chinese home page, it will allows you to select Big5/GB/HZ, so you should select anyone then set the UW-DBM 4 to the same one.
