How to set-up automatic external hard drive detection (via Usb 2.0)?

0

Hello. I’m a recent convert to linux from XP (although I still have a dual boot) and am currently running Suse 10.0 on my IBM T42 and have most of the main kde/gnome packages installed, etc. I use GNOME 2.12 as my WM. With minor exeception, everything’s proven to work very well so far (includ. wireless internet). However, I am not sure how I can get my system to automatically detect (and create associated icons on the desktop, etc.) when I connect my external hard drive to my laptop via the usb port after the laptop is already on. If it’s running and I connect the hard drive and fire it up, nothing happens and it doesn’t appear in the file manager (Nautilus). However, if I already have the drive connected and running when I boot the system, it detects it and things proceed as you would expect (it has an icon on the desktop, appears in nautilus, etc.). I’ve tried to find useful information on this on the web and these forums, but have failed. If anyone could please kindly offer any info
