How to (safely) remove a 30 gallon propane tank valve?

So as it turns out removing a valve from a tank (that’s been sitting with the valve open all night just in case) is relatively boring. After removing the protective collar I used a pipe wrench and an eight foot cheater pipe to easily remove the valve. I went slower and slower as the valve unscrewed thinking that propane would come hissing out any minute-no dice. The valve just plopped onto the ground after being unscrewed all the way. I then filled the tank with some soap and water to displace any gas and get rid of the oily odorant that is added to the propane. I’m going to use the threaded bung for the inlet/vacuum port, and I’m going to drill a hole in the other end into which I’ll insert a schrader valve so that I can use air pressure to push out the oil once it’s been collected.
