How to replace the pull cord on my Murray push lawnmower?

I have a Murray lawnmower model 21975X199B with a 6hp Briggs and Stratton engine. The pull cord broke at the base of the handle and the whole cord went into the mower. I removed the shroud and the cord spool is beneath a metal vented cover held down by rivets (I think). How do I get to the cord spool to replace the cord? Thanks in advance for any help.
