There is a switch on the top left hand side of the phone that flicks it from silent mode to ringer mode and back again. When you flick the switch an icon appears in the screen telling you which mode you are in. If you want it to be on silent and not vibrate then you need to alter the vibrate button in Settings/Sounds.
