Dogs generally come into their first heat, which is the tim they can become pregnant, at 6-10 month of age. Should your dog come into heat before you can have her spayed, you must keep her away from all male dogs for at least 3 weeks. She must NOT be left alone outdoors for any reason, and really you should only have her out when you have her leash in your hand, since male dogs will mate through fences that they can’t dig under, climb over ot plow through. Dogs wanting to breed can do some absolutely astounding things. Only careful vigilance can prevent puppies, and you are right on one thing, properly caring for puppies is EXPENSIVE.
